Ice Flyers Snap 3-Game Losing treak

By Mac Knefely, Pensacola News Journal

Pensacola Ice Flyers' Lorne Misita knew his team needed a wake-up call.

After a 6-2 loss to Knoxville on Thursday night, the Ice Flyers responded in a big way, nabbing a 3-1 victory against first-place Huntsville in front of 3,104 fans at the Civic Center on Friday night.

"(The effort) was top-to-bottom (Friday), we had all 18 guys going out there," said Misita, who scored a goal in the win. "Last night, we didn't have that. When you have only half the guys going, you're not going to win."

The Flyers relied much on their blue-collar, workman-like mentality for the victory. The win snapped a three-game skid, just in time to face Knoxville again tonight at 7:05.

"We're just a gritty team; we're not fancy by any means," Misita added. "At times we can be, but basically we're just hard-nosed, get it in, hit and bump; that's basically our game plan. (Goalie Ryan) Scott was unbelievable - he was upset with himself (Thursday) night, but (Friday) he was ready to go. I don't know too many people better."

Scott had a stellar game while facing a barrage of shots early. Huntsville finally broke through on its 28th attempt as Chris Myers scored with 6:50 left in the second period. About a minute later, Misita hit on an unassisted slap shot to even it up at 1-1 with 5:32 left.

As Scott continued his torrid pace in net, including blocking away a possible own goal, the Ice Flyers offense soon took advantage of the momentum swing. With just 37 seconds left in the second period, Brian Deeth skated behind the net, then found Dan Buccella who connected from close range to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.
