NEWSDate: Mar 13, 2010 Havoc Stop Cottonmouths At HomeBy Kathy Gierer, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Both the Columbus Cottonmouths and visiting Huntsville Havoc had a lot to gain at the Civic Center on Friday night. The Havoc grabbed two important points in the SPHL standings with their 3-1 win and the Snakes failed to put a little distance between themselves and last-place Louisiana. The Havoc snapped Columbus' eight-game home unbeaten streak. The Snakes lost at home for the first time since Jan. 17. They also entered the contest unbeaten in their last five games. The SPHL standings still have a lot of wiggle room for several teams. Huntsville kept pace with first-place Mississippi. The Surge defeated Pensacola 3-2 and their lead on the Havoc is still five points. Fayetteville fell to Knoxville 7-5 and remains in third place, only one point behind the Havoc. All three have already earned playoff berths. The Snakes, who are nine points ahead of Louisiana, frustrated the crowd on Teddy Bear Toss night, waiting 31:19 before scoring. With Brent Clarke's goal, hundreds of stuffed animals rained down on the ice. They will be used by firefighters and other emergency workers to comfort children in traumatic situations. Little did the Snakes know when Clarke scored, that it would be their only goal. They outshot the Havoc 37-31 but could only put one puck past goaltender Dan McWhinney. Clarke's goal was textbook Cottonmouth passing. "(Craig) Stahl dumped it in," Clarke said. "(Orrin) Hergott got it behind the net and I went into the slot and one-timed it." Stahl described the disappointment of losing a close one at this time of year. |
