NEWSDate: Mar 19, 2010 Havoc Stumble Against IceGatorsBy Bill Bryant, Huntsville Time For a five-minute stretch Thursday night at the Von Braun Center, the wheels not only came off for the Huntsville Havoc, the battery died, too. By the time they got recharged, it was too late for it to matter against lowly Louisiana. The last-place Ice Gators scored four goals from the 13:50 mark to the 18:56 mark of the second period against bewildered goalie Dan McWhinney, as they dealt the Havoc a 5-3 loss in front of an announced crowd of 3,529. Two of the four scores came on 2-on-1 breakaways and another one on a solo breakaway. "They kind of put their foot on the gas and we took three or four shifts off," Huntsville defenseman Bill McCreary said. "These are pros out here, and they're not going to let you get away with that. It really cost us." The cumulative effect might not be known until this time next week. The Havoc (28-15-9, 65 points) lead Fayetteville by three points for second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League. They have three straight road games before ending the regular season at home next week against Columbus. Losing to Louisiana (19-30-2, 40 points), which has been eliminated from the postseason and was three skaters short against Huntsville, was not part of the finishing-the-season-strong plan. "We warned them before the game," Havoc coach Randy Murphy said. "They played like they had something to play for, and we played like we didn't. We decided to put it on cruise control." |
