Mississippi, Pensacola Begin Two-Game Set Tonight

By Doug Barber, Biloxi Sun Herald

The Mississippi Surge, closing in on a SPHL regular-season title, meets Pensacola twice this weekend: tonight in the Coast Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at Pensacola at 7 p.m.

Mississippi (31-12-8) holds a five-point lead over Huntsville, which was playing Thursday night. Five games are left in the regular season for the Surge.

"Pensacola has a good work ethic,'' Surge coach Steffon Walby said. "They are a lot like us. They don't give up. They have a good first line, with players like Travis Whitehead.''

Six-foot-4 Matt Zultek leads the Surge in scoring with 45 goals and 21 assists. Michael Richard has 23 goals and 43 assists. Tim Velemirovich has 26 goals and 32 assists

Pensacola (24-21-8) counters with Lorne Misita (28 goals, 34 assists) and Chris Rebernik (26 goals, 33 assists).

"The (regular-season) title is our second goal,'' Walby said. "This is a big weekend for our club. We want to be hitting on all cylinders for the playoffs. We were flat last Thursday (in a loss). We had lighter practice this week and I think the guys' legs will be fresher.''

After this weekend, the Surge close out the season next weekend with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

With just five games left, the Surge hold their fate in their own hands as far as winning the regular season.
